MS Word has been an extremely prominent tool in my education and I have used it for many years. Word is definitely my favorite processing software because it is universally accepted, straight forward, efficient and typically the standard software. In high school, I used a combination of Word and Google Docs. At the time Word did not automatically save work so I preferred using Google Docs so that I wouldn't lose my work if I forgot to save everything but since Word also automatically saves now it is my preferred software.
The ISTE standards for educators include: Learner, leader, citizen, collaborator, designer, facilitator, and analyst. The standard that is most meaningful to me is the designer standard. I am a very creative person and I want that to be reflected in my style of teaching. I thoroughly enjoy using Canva, Word, and Powerpoint to make learning effective and creative. While this class has highlighted the importance of design through technology, I have also observed the importance on my own in classes I have been enrolled in. The standards of facilitator and analyst are still unclear to me and I will continue to research them further.
The term "digital native" refers to someone who was born in a generation where technology was more easily accessible and therefore will be better at using any form of technology. On the contrary, a "digital native" is someone born before a certain level or extent of technology was available making them less likely to understand how to effectively use different forms of technology. While this logic seems correct at first glance, it is very flawed and not consistently true. While many people who would be considered "digital immigrants" do struggle with technology usage and application, it is not due to the year they were born but rather amount of practice or even personal preference on what tools to use. There will always be differences in each generation that goes on but it is important that while technological advancements occur, societal advancements should occur simultaneously. In my future classroom I do anticipate some differences between my knowledge and my students knowledge but to overcome this I will take on the learner ISTE standard.
